Gold Medals in Sports

Sporting events are very well recognised worldwide because of the prize that awaits the winner. This will give them a sense of superiority and dominance over fellow competitors in a specific sport. It does not matter if it is a local or international event, players and individual coaches would make it sure that their teams would win the game. It would always seem that sports have become part of the lives of people regardless of race or colour. Aside from bronze and silver, the gold medal is the most important prize of them all.

The award that refers to the gold medal has not only been adopted in sports but also in other competitive fields, such as athletics, music and writing. According to a reliable source, most gold medals are gold-plated, including the Olympic gold medal. However, other exceptions would include the Lorentz Medal, the US Congressional Gold Medal and the Nobel Prize winners' medals in which all are made of solid gold. For international sporting events, the minting of the gold medal is the responsibility of the host country.

Designing these medals is more likely designing a gold coin in recent history. In olden times, the oldest forms of money are the gold coins in which the first models were coined in 560 BC and followed by silver coins in about 700 BC. Nevertheless, the trend has changed when these coins were disused in the early 20th century. In 1933, most parts of the world have stopped making gold coins as currency. Such coins have only become collector's items for some people who are fond of collecting vintage artefacts.
