Pre 1920 British silver coins contained high purity sterling silver (92.5%) The table below will give you a guide of the actual bullion silver value in each coin. 1920-1946

1947 On
After 1947 up until the decimal coinage was introduced in 1971 British coins were made of just copper, nickel and a few other metals but didn't contain any silver. Some of these coins were made a silver colour but have no silver bullion content. The 1oz Silver Britannia coins are still been made today and offer a great opportunity to own some very collectable silver bullion.
Putting a value on pre 1947 silver coins is not easy. You can buy lots of coins at auction normally for just above the spot value of silver which is just scrap value. Rare coins in good condition will of course sell for more.
These old British silver coins offer an enjoyable way to store bullion silver and I know of many a collector that has brought a lot at scrap value only to find some very collectable examples hidden in the horde.
